Parking and Traffic Management

Each Council has its own local laws relating to parking. Rangers are trained to use the latest equipment and technology to enforce these laws and are often called upon by Police to assist with traffic control, this may be in an emergency situation or at a major event such as the Christmas Pageant, Sky Show or sporting venue. Parking and traffic management are a daily part of our work.

Rangers endeavour to carry out park patrols in a friendly manner viewing their work as a service to the community. Why is it necessary to strictly enforce parking laws?

Vehicle parking must be regulated and parking laws enforced to maintain the orderly use of parking facilities. Illegal parking can cause great inconvenience and in many cases be very dangerous to pedestrians and other traffic. Footpath obstructions, clearways, bus stops, access exit/entrances, Acrod (Disabled) bays and many other parking areas must be regularly monitored.

Time restrictions are enforced. After parking for the time allowed, drivers must leave the street for 1 hour before returning, this creates a turnover of traffic giving others the opportunity to visit the area and access available parking.

Many inconsiderate parking situations cause great inconvenience to the public and are hazardous.

Parking across pedestrian footpaths and in bays for the disabled are quite common.

Another dangerous and inconvenience causing situation, is the parking on “Clearway” during peak period traffic.

In some extreme cases of when a vehicle is parked across and entry/exit to property denying access, tow away laws apply.

These cars are then impounded.

Other offences such as staying longer than the permitted time, loading zones, bus stops and no parking/no standing areas are dealt with by issuing an infringement notice.

Revenue from infringement notices from parking ticket machines, is channelled back into maintaining and upgrading parking facilities to preserve public safety.

At major sporting events or other public occasions involving large crowds, rangers work closely with police to assist in maintaining law and order along with free traffic flow. Rangers are often called upon to assist with road blocks and other duties.

WA Rangers also encourage the use of public transport, especially when travelling to special events.

Even very simple tasks such as crosswalk duties at schools are carried out in the interests of public safety.

No one likes to receive a parking ticket! Regardless of how the public view parking and its enforcement, it is of absolute importance that Rangers patrol parking facilities to ensure the provision of service & safety to all members of the public.
